Program Overview

Experience Kenyan culture, environment and wildlife while earning college transfer Humanities credit in World Issues Journalism. Students will learn about social justice efforts in Kenya, see models of environmental sustainability, and participate in a photo safari including the "big-five" African species.

Course Information

This course focuses on news reporting and multimedia storytelling skills that are applied to world issues: water, energy, food, war, and free speech. You will learn how to use multi-media storytelling to capture your African experience.

Excursions


This program includes a three-day photo safari in a private game conservation area with close opportunity to see wildlife and learn from conservation models. Additional sites include local markets, and the opportunity to interview and interact with Kenyan students, community leaders and Maasai tribal community.

Additional Information

A passport is required for U.S. citizens traveling out of the United States. If you need to apply for a passport, it is advised to allow at least 6 weeks for standard processing.

All students are required to attend a pre-departure orientation. This orientation provides information on health and safety, packing, trip planning, flight logistics, and other essential information.


Lodging Cost

The final cost for 2020 is still being determined, but will be approximately $2400 and will include:
  • Lodging
  • In-Country transportation
  • All meals in country
  • Program related excursion
  • Transportation to and from the airport both in Kenya and the US
  • Mandatory Health Insurance


Additional costs not included in the program fee:
  • International Airfare
  • Tuition for 1 or 3 Madison College credits
  • Passport (if you do not have one)
  • Spending money

Interested students are required to complete an application by the deadline date. All materials, including the initial deposit of $500 (made payable to Madison College), must be received by 4:00 p.m. in the Center for International Education. (NOTE: unless an applicant is rejected, the $500 deposit is non-refundable).
