Program dates: Program runs over spring break. Program will not run in 2019, but is expected to run again in 2020 with changes to location. The program activities will remain similar.
Program Overview
The group of Madison College Dental Hygiene students will travel to Ambergris Caye, Belize to provide dental hygiene care and education to children at Holy Cross School in San Mateo. The school has a fully furnished dental clinic (San Pedro Smile Center) with three dental chairs. Students will provide the children with dental cleanings, x-rays, dental sealants, fluoride treatments and dental health education. Students will also go to classrooms to provide interactive dental health education.
Students from other institutions are welcome to apply, although preference will be given to Madison College students.

Course Information
This Study Abroad opportunity is currently a service-learning program, with no associated course credit. Program travel to Belize will occur over spring break.
During the travel experience, students will be responsible for participating in a group discussion of the experience with other participants.
Accommodation and Meals
Lodging will be at the Blue Tang Inn in San Pedro (2 blocks from the Reef View). Accommodations will be shared lodging. Breakfast is included with the housing. Lunch will be provided by Holy Cross School on days when students work there. Other meals will be paid for by students, but will often be taken as a group in the local area.
Excursions
As part of the program cost, students will experience a number of excursions and cultural activities. Additional excursions may be possible for an additional fee.
Possible excursions may include:
- Sirena Azul Sunset Cruise
- Snorkeling – Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley
Additional Information
A passport is required for U.S. citizens traveling to Belize. If you need to apply for a passport, it is advised to allow at least 6 weeks for standard processing.
All students are required to attend a pre-departure orientation. This orientation provides information on health and safety, packing, trip planning, flight logistics, and other essential information.
Cost
The program fee for 2018 is approximately $2155. Final fees are still being determined.

- Lodging for the duration of the program
- International airfare and flight to Ambergris Caye

- Local Transportation via golf cart rental
