Program Overview

Embark on a personal healing journey while learning about traditional Peruvian healing practices during this two-week summer program. In this three-credit health elective course students will travel to the Sacred Valley of Peru and become immersed in the traditional medicinal practices of the Andean shamans. Travel to sacred sites of the Inca, participation in traditional ceremony, and extensive hiking at high altitudes are integral components of this course.

The Sacred Valley was home to the Inca Empire. The major attraction of this region is Machu Picchu, tucked away high in the Andes Mountains. Peruvian culture today is steeped in Amerindian and Spanish traditions.

Course Information

Participants will earn credit in “Traditional Healing in a Cross Cultural Context” (3 credits), which is offered as a study abroad course. This course explores the concepts of traditional healing and indigenous cosmology as it relates to the health of the individual, the community, and the earth. Grading is based on independent research and collaborative projects.

Due to the high altitude of the Andes Mountains, students should be in good physical health and be comfortable hiking for extended periods of time over uneven terrain.
